American Antiquarian Society

Worcester, MA

The American Antiquarian Society is a Nationally Registered Historic Landmark and independent research library founded in 1812. The library's collections document the life of America's people from the colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The project included working closely with the project architect to design a library/archive storage building expansion wing and create an parking lot for visitors and employees. GEI was retained to provide topographic survey, design, permitting services and construction administration services. The project included the following:

• Prepared design drawings and documents suitable for public bid.

• Design new utilities including fire flow testing for a new fire protection water service, sanitary sewer and drainage including stormwater management with a large subsurface stormwater detention tank.

• Assist the architect with laying out a parking lot to comply with City zoning requirements.

• Design was challenging due to steep slopes and high proposed retaining wall separating expansion from abutting roadway (Route 9).

• Permit the project through the Planning Board, Conservation Commission and DPW for a sewer connection.
